Senators Grassley, Ernst demand answers from VA

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KCRG-TV9) — Iowa Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst are demanding answers from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Back in December we reported how the VA Medical Center in Iowa City hired a doctor, even though he faced multiple lawsuits for malpractice.

Doctor John Henry Schneider started there in April and resigned November 29th. In Wyoming, where he previously practiced, his license was revoked after a patient died.

The December report from USA Today showed a number of VA hospitals across the country went against hiring standards and hired doctors despite claims of substandard care.

That report also found the Iowa City VA hospital hired Dr. Schneider even though he disclosed that fact and that there had been malpractice lawsuits against him.

When Senators Grassley and Ernst got wind of the report, they demanded answers then, and set a February 28, 2018 deadline to learn more.

On Friday, the senators sent a letter to the VA, after they say the VA failed to meet that deadline for a response.
