HINGTON, D.C. — – U.S. Representative Evan Jenkins (R-WV) has told Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin that the transfer of a problematic VA employee from Oregon to West Virginia was “inappropriate” and must not happen again.“Can you reassure us that the way in which you are dealing with and handling those employees of the VA that are not committed to the mission of the best possible care aren’t being swept under the rug and shifted to another state? I don’t want Oregon’s hand-me-downs,” Rep. Jenkins told Secretary Shulkin during a recent House Appropriations Committee Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee hearing.Douglas Paxton, director of the Roseburg, Ore., VA Medical Center, was slated to be demoted and transferred to an associate director position at the Huntington, WV, VA Medical Center. After an outcry from the congressional delegation, including Rep. Jenkins, the planned transfer was canceled. “Because of the feedback, as you know, that didn’t happen, and I think that’s the way it should work. We have to come up with mutual decisions about what’s best,” Shulkin said.
